Sprout vegetable plants from seed! For a more cost effective approach to creating an edible garden, you may want to buy seeds rather than plants. If you don’t need the amount of plants an entire packet of seeds will produce, why not go in on several types of seeds with a few neighbors and divide the seedlings up between you?
Use this seed germination short cut! Here’s a simple tip to help you maximize the yield of your seeds and avoid the thinning process that using seeds typically requires.
1. Pour your packet into a bowl.
2. Cover the seeds with a wet paper towel and place in the sun or a well-lit place ideally near a window.
3. Re-wet the paper towel as often as needed to keep it moist at all times.
4. After a few days to a week, depending on the type of seed and the temperature of your home, you should notice that the majority of the seeds are beginning to sprout.
5. Once most of the seeds are germinated you can go ahead and plant them directly into your pots or other garden containers. Make sure to plant the seeds sprouted side down as what you see sprouting will become the plant’s root system.
6. If outdoor temperatures are still too cold, plant your seedlings in a cardboard egg carton bottom filled with gardening soil by placing one plant in each section. Continue to keep your baby plants indoors near a good light source until the time is right to transplant and move the seedlings outside.
